Arthritis is so commonplace that we sometimes underestimate its seriousness as a threat to public health. According to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in people 15 years of age and older. Although there is no cure for arthritis, there is evidence that people with arthritis who participate in appropriate types of physical activity can improve physical function and reduce pain. Physical therapists can be important in creating an exercise program designed specifically for people with arthritis. The program uses gentle activity to help increase joint flexibility and range of motion to help improve muscle strength.
