As a result of the pathophysiology of COPD, many physical impairments, functional limitations, and disabilities occur over time. COPD impairments such as increased respiratory rate, decreased vital capacity, increased use of accessory muscles of inspiration, and chest wall stiffness are associated with decreased tolerance of movement, decreased walking speed and distance, frequent episodes of dyspnea, and eventually inability to perform activities of daily living.
